Feeling the Heat

This just posted on the Seattle Urban Farm Co-op listserv by Dave:

Here’s an interesting bit of chicken lore: Did you know that chickens can’t taste pepper heat? That’s right! You can feed a chicken a fresh habanero pepper, and it won’t even flinch. Lizards and chickens are alike in that manner.

  • Peppers (ground pepper flakes) are a common use to help along a hen who has stopped laying or whose productions has slowed down in the winter. I sprinkled a teaspoon of red pepper/cayenne into the feed for that particular chicken and waited– within two days she was laying again! Yay~
